A senior Egyptian interior ministry official was killed on Tuesday (January 28) in Cairo by gunmen as he left his home.

According to reports, General Mohamed Saeed was on his way to work at around 9:30 a.m. when the incident happened.

Two gunmen riding a motorbike approached him while he was in his car on Al-Haram Street in Giza and opened fire several times. The bullets hit him in the head and chest.

The gunmen fled the scene while he was transported to the hospital where he later died from his injuries.

The Interior Ministry confirmed Saeed's killing.

Saaed was an aide to Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim, who survived an assassination attempt last year, Reuters reported.

Prime Minister Hazem El-Beblawi condemned the incident and said "that these cowardly actions will only increase our determination to purge Egypt of terrorism."

According to reports, in the violence since Egypt former Islamist President Mohammed Morsi was toppled, hundreds of members of the security forces have also been killed.
