Police arrested baggage handlers and served warrants at 25 locations after a several month long theft sting at Los Angeles International Airport Wednesday.
Officers went undercover, posing as baggage handlers, and observed the theft ring going through people's luggage while transferring bags from the conveyor belts to mobile platforms. Handlers would rummage through luggage searching for electronics, jewelry, and other goods that they could lift and sell on Craigslist. Among items stolen was a watch belonging to Paris Hilton valued at $100,000.
Most of the thefts came from Terminal 4 at the Tom Bradley International Terminal which serves American Airlines, American Eagle, and Qantas airlines. Some of the suspects were employed by Menzies Aviation who are one of 350 employers at LAX. Menzies officials released a statement saying they believe the thefts were "limited to a handful of employees, acting independently."
