Four Egyptian soldiers were wounded in a bomb attack that targeted a military intelligence building near Cairo on Sunday.

The blast took place in the village of Anshas about 100km northeast of the capital on Sunday morning. Aside from the targeted building, an air base and a experimental nuclear reactor are located nearby.

According to Al Jazeera citing an Egyptian army spokesperson, three insurgents driving a car packed with 20 kg of explosives left it by the entrance of the military building. The assailants detonated the bombs using a remote control, causing partial damage to the back wall of the building.

Authorities said the bombing was a "cowardly terrorist attack", and the military was searching for the assailants in the area.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Muslim Brotherhood, which was declared a terrorist organisation by the military-backed government last week, denied any involvement and condemned the attack.

Some Egyptians thought the attack was launched to deter citizens from participating in a referendum on a new constitution in mid-January. With a large turnout, the referendum will enable the interim government to solidify its legitimacy and support, and lead to the restoration of democracy following the ouster of President Mohammed Morsi in July.

The bombing was the third such attack in less than a week. Five people were injured during a bomb attack on a bus on Thursday, while 15 people were killed during a suicide bomb attack at a police building in Mansoura on Tuesday.
