Classic Game Room presents a CGR Undertow review of Dark Souls II for PC developed by From Software and published by Namco Bandai Games.
Dark Souls II is the third game in From Software’s Soul series. As Demon’s Souls was the spiritual successor to the King’s Field series, Dark Souls was the spiritual successor to Demon’s Souls. Dark Souls II is a not quite direct sequel though it utilizes the qualities of the past Soul games as a terrifying, immersive, challenging, and large scale experience. Dark Souls II takes place in the land of Dranlaic, another dark and seeming abandoned land, degraded by time and a darkness that lingers within its ruined landscapes. Players choose from a roster of classes, including atypical warrior and sorcerer based classes. Combat is a fierce and polished as ever, allowing players to properly duel wield swords for the first time. Invasions and PVP are still a large part of the game, adding a few new covenants to spice up invasions and summons. A few new changes include the ability to fast travel from any bonfire and the inclusions of a hub area where players can level up their character. The game falls back into the category of the bigger sequel, with more than enough new and old content to satisfy fans, though it also may chase away anyone not familiar with the deceptive, dark, and heft amount of challenge the game’s offer.
