Fire engulfs parts of Chile's Valparaiso, two dead

An enormous fire ripped through Chile's port city Valparaiso on Saturday and into Sunday.

The large forest fire has killed two people, destroyed at least 500 homes and that figure could increase once authorities have had the chance to assess the full extent of the damage.

Thousands of people have been forced to flee the city and many residents are said to be suffering from smoke inhalation.

(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE RESIDENT SAYING:

"The fire is down there (pointing down the hill) and up there as well (up the hill). We were afraid and we had to get out of there as it was very bad up there."

Chilean President Michelle Bachelet declared a state of emergency.

Volunteer firefighters battled to contain the blaze, which was fueled by strong Pacific winds.

The charred remains of two elderly people were found on a street.
