China said on Saturday (March 22) that its satellite may have spotted a very large piece of debris in the Indian Ocean, potentially from the missing flight MH370.
According to Xinhua news, the object was detected by the country's high-definition Earth observation satellite "Gaofen-1" around noon on March 18. The object measures 22.5 m by 13 m and was found just 120 km from the debris spotted on March 16.
Australia's maritime authority said the location of the new debris falls within the search area on March 22. However, the large object had not been sighted during the search on Saturday, BBC reported.
The search area is a four-hour flight from land, meaning Australia's Orion aircraft can only search for about two hours before they must fly back to the base. It is also an area marked by strong currents and rough seas, and the ocean depth varies between 1150 to 7010 meters.
