The death toll from the massive landslide in Washington state rose to eight on Sunday evening (March 23) with 18 people still missing.

The landslide happened near the town of Oso, about 90 km north of Seattle at about 11 am. According to Reuters, eight people were also injured in the landslide. Snohomish County Fire District 21 Chief Travis Hots said in an earlier news conference that the rescuers didn't find anybody alive and there was no sign of life after a search of much of the area on foot.

The landslide occurred near the Cascade Mountains along the Stillaguamish River, the debris comprised of mud and rocks reportedly piled up to 5 m deep in some places, Reuters reported. It also caused blockage in the Stillaguamish River. The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning in Snohomish until Sunday.

Authorities said that ground water saturation tied to heavy rainfall in the area over the past month was the cause for the landslide, CNN reported.
