The future is here! Now, even though we’re burning through fossil fuels faster than you can say "Impending Doom," it's nice to see us finally taking some steps in the right direction. I'm referring to solar power plants. The largest of which just fired up in California.

The 5-mile Ivanpah Solar Electric generating system is located in the Mojave Desert. 3 enormous units each contain a circular array of mirrors that reflect the suns energy toward a 459-foot tower in the centre. Water in the tower is heated by the rays to produce steam, which spins turbines to produce electricity.

The largest solar thermal plant in the world opens in California's Mojave Desert, after a debate that pitted renewable energy against a threatened tortoise. The Ivanpah solar plant is one of seven big solar farms scheduled to open in California in the coming months, as a result of the state's push to produce one third of its electricity from renewable energy.
