Mynor Varela, 20, is accused of murdering Officer Roberto Sanchez when he smashed his Tahoe into a patrol car, Chief Charlie Beck said. Varela was trying to aid a friend who was fleeing the cruiser in a separate car.

Officer Roberto Sanchez was tailing a speeding Chevy Camaro early Saturday morning through Harbor City when Mynor Varela, with "willful and wanton disregard," T-boned the squad car, killing Sanchez and injuring his partner, Officer Richard Medina, according to Chief Charlie Beck.

After the violent 4 a.m. crash, Varela fled the scene but was picked up about a mile away.

KTLA reports that the LAPD cruiser was so badly damaged that rescuers cut off the door to remove Roberto Sanchez and his partner, Richard Medina. Sanchez died of his injuries.

Varela has pleaded not guilty to charges of murder, vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, assault on a peace officer and leaving the scene of an accident.
