Researchers at the University of Copenhagen have developed a helmet that has the potential to relieve symptoms of depression.
The medical device was tested on 65 volunteers during a clinical trial. Half of the subjects wore the helmet at home for 30 minutes a day. The other participants used the helmet twice a day, each session lasting for half an hour.
"The helmet is amazing," Annemette Ovlisen, one of the trial participants, told the BBC. "It's like the fog lifts. It was like somebody hit the reset button." Like Ovlisen, the majority of subjects reported improved moods. Throughout the trial, the subjects continued to take their antidepressants.
Consisting of seven coils, the helmet emits Transcranial Pulsating Electro Magnetic Fields (T-PEMF) to brain tissue. Mimicking the brain's natural electrical fields, these pulses spur the growth of blood vessels and the release of growth hormones by stimulating the cerebral capillaries.
Scientists say that the device has a different theoretical basis from the controversial electroconvulsive (ECT) therapy, which may lead to memory loss and even personality changes. It uses a much weaker electric field that does not cause discomfort for the person receiving the treatment. The only known side effect is mild nausea that goes away after treatment.
The University of Copenhagen is awaiting approval from the European Union for the device. If all goes well, the helmet may be on the market in as little as six months.
