Two Mississippi sisters are being hailed as heroes after they saved a bus full of students after the vehicle burst into flames.

Bettye Windom and her sister Beth Insley were stopped at a red light when they spotted the Claiborne County school bus drive by on Highway 28 with smoke pouring from its engine.

The siblings gave chase, flashing their headlights to try and attract the attention of the unsuspecting driver.

Desperate to attract the driver's attention to the impending disaster, one of the sisters hung out the window while waving and screaming at the driver, before pulling in front of the bus and slamming on their brakes.

After pulling over, the driver then tried to tackle the blaze with a fire extinguisher while the adult chaperones evacuated the terrified kids from the rear of the bus.

Thanks to the sisters' prompt actions, only one student was injured as she exited the bus. An investigation has been launched into what caused the six-year old bus to catch fire.
