AMCU strikers block South Africa platinum mines

Views 2.5K

In South Africa, around a thousand stick-wielding strikers are continuing a protest that has stopped production at Lonmin’s Marikana platinum mine in a dispute over pay.

Some of the protesters told reporters they were there to block anyone from reaching the shafts, as some rival mineworkers wanted to return to work.

The stoppage, now in its 16th week, is legal but has become increasingly violent with intimidation on the rise.

Four people have been murdered around the site in the last week, but no arrests have been made.

Two years ago, police shot dead 34 striking Lonmin miners during a violent, wildcat strike.
