Suspected members of Islamist militant sect Boko Haram have killed at least 60 people and injured several more in an attack on a village in northeast Nigeria, according to reports by Reuters and AFP.
Boko Haram is fighting to create an Islamic state in part of Nigeria, which is Africa's most populous country and roughly split demographically between Christians and Muslims, and has killed thousands since launching an uprising in the country's northeast more than four years ago.
Witnesses said men attacked the village of Kala Balge, in Borno state near the border with Cameroon, early on Thursday morning while residents were still sleeping.
The attackers arrived on motorcycles and set houses alight. When residents fled, the attackers opened fire, killing at least 60 people and injuring several more, Baba Shehu Gulumba, a local government administrator, told AFP.
One witness told Reuters he counted 60 bodies scattered around after the attack.
Boko Haram militants killed eight people in a separate attack on the village of Dikwa on Wednesday.
