Thai army summons politicians to Bangkok

With the first night of curfew over, the Thai army has summoned ousted prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra and 100 other prominent political leaders to report to a military complex to the north of Bangkok by 10 am local time.

It follows widespread international condemnation of the coup d’etat on Thursday which followed months of anti-government protests. Though some welcomed the intervention. “The soldiers have come out and brought order to our situation. Now we will avoid bloodshed,” explained Yannakorn Chinnakorn from Bangkok.

The country was already under martial law when General Prayuth Chanocha launched the bloodless coup after rival political factions failed to compromise during two-days of army-mediated talks. To date 30 people have been killed in clashes since the crisis began last Autumn.
