Police in Turkey fired teargas and used water cannon to disperse protesters marking the one-year anniversary of the start of the country’s deadly anti-government demonstrations.

In Istanbul around 25,000 police were deployed in Taksim Square at the centre of the 2013 rallies.

Several thousand people gathered near to the square, shouting for the government to step down, but fled when authorities opened fire.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan had earlier urged people not to join in the protests.
