cake and candles and ice cream
happy birthday!
I came to tell you that,
I didn't get you a gift, a card, or anything really
but today
if I have the means, if the world cooperates
and if I could, I would
give, for you to keep and cherish forever...
Everything
the warm sunlight through your window
after a cold snow-fallen night
the smell of rain in April, bottled up
and corked with damp cloud
the feeling of hot sand sifting through your fingers
on a clear summer day at the beach
multi-colored sharpies for marking things as your own
for doodling, scribbling, and scrawling your emotions
miles of frustration-relieving bubble wrap
for all your popping and stomping enjoyment
the comets whizzing through space
the wisdom of ages past
I'd give you,
life
dreamland
heaven and hell
tied up in a neat little package and
express-mailed straight to your door
Happy Birthday, Kyle
(and all the things I could give)
