Not Long Left - Attempted Star Gazing In The City

We searched for over an hour
for a dog shit free patch of grass
to lay our aching backs upon.
Defeated yet unsuprised
we settled for the roof of a bus
shelter, Sally thought it was a
good idea 'we'll be closer to the
stars' she said.
Together we brushed aside
damp mushy leaves, a leafy
waterfall fell. Rusty cans stolen
of thier colour, and drained of
thier power, were kicked into
the hungry night. Sally swore
she saw a needle, on closer
inspection, we found it to be a
shredded sweet wrapper, shiny side up.
We laid back and looked up at the
blackboard sky, a blackboard sky that
lacked even the slightest chalk mark.
Nothing but black empty silence.
Boredom or backache won its race
to the brain, so we lowered ourselves
back down onto the chewing gum
splattered floor.
Dissapointed yet unsuprised
we made stars appear within the black
of our eyes, Fixed our gaze onto the flickering
light of the bus stop, then closed our eyes tight.
Stars, Millions of speckled stars........
Sally swore she saw a shooting star,
I didn't have the heart to tell her that it was
merely the headlights of a coming car.
Star gazing in the city is a lottery of smoggy chance.
