The fire hissed and crackled,
Promising a warmth I could not feel,
Even in my frozen state.
The cheery yellow and red glow
Gave out a vow of heat,
Yet my body shivered,
For it was not my physical body,
Nor yet my poor aching heart
That felt the lack of fire,
But my lonely heart,
My battered, broken soul,
Betrayed by your leave-taking,
Which cried out
In its desolate, icy estate,
Which felt the cold of emptiness.
So I sit here by an empty fire,
Collapsed in on myself,
Lonely, despairing, cold.
