Being close to the music, not hearing a note,
I write lines I hope will be heard
aloud in the heads of my readers, who’ll quote
it in choruses, shaken and stirred.
John Kenney writes about writing in a fictitious baseball camp, ending with:
March 4: Spoke to agent about the panel discussion with Alice Sebold. We do, after all, share a literary vision. Like her I feel I cannot be held to earthly constraints. As I like to say, “to write is to be close to music without actually hearting the notes.”
