KLM, The Royal Dutch Airlines of the Netherlands, has drawn many enraged comments for the tweet it posted following the Netherlands World Cup victory over Mexico.
It read, “Adios Amigos! #NEDMEX” and included a caricature of a man sporting a moustache and a sombrero.
Reactions were immediate and called out the airline for being everything from racist to unsportsmanlike.
One person wrote, "Leave it to @KLM to be racist & mean about a World Cup game. I am no longer a customer," said one outraged fan.
Another commented, "Dutch arrogance at it's finest. KLM just lost 100% of it's Mexican customers."
Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal was also quite vocal about his feelings on the matter, broadcasting a profanity-laden tweet to his nearly 2 million followers.
In it, he vowed to boycott the airline.
Shortly after the flood of negative responses began KLM deleted the tweet, but by then it was too late.
It had already been re-tweeted about 10 thousand times.
The airline has since issued an apology and assurances that the message was never mean to be offensive and that it was posted in good fun.
