The Chinese lunar rover named Jade Rabbit is still functioning but it’s not in the best shape. An investigation into what exactly went wrong with the rover shows it was likely damaged by a rock.

Experts believe Jade Rabbit hit a rock while cruising around on harsh terrain. The deputy chief designer of the rover claims the landing site was more challenging to maneuver than what was first thought.

The area was covered in rocks that made it look similar to a quarry. Back in January the rover sent out a dying message.

At that point in time, Jade Rabbit had only been on the moon for about 6 weeks, or halfway through its scheduled three-month long mission. It reacted to controller demands, but the responses were difficult and delayed.

Unfortunately the six-wheel rover still can’t activate its solar panels or wheels. Despite the setbacks, the Jade Rabbit has continued to compile data from the moon and send it back to Earth.

Experts agree it has ‘over-served’ its time on the lunar surface but they hope the strong rover will work a few more miracles.
