The prescriptions that doctors provided would often just hide the symptoms – if they did even that. But then my body would start rejecting the medication and the herpes came back, often worse than before.

As real and despairing as this problem was for me, my doctors never seemed to take me as seriously as I wanted. My first visit with every doctor ended with a half-hearted “you’ll never get rid of it, but go ahead and try this pill.”

I felt like every time I had an appointment, they would simply pull out the checklist. “That didn’t work? Let’s move on to the next pill.” This is such a frustrating feeling.
