NASA hasn’t quite figured out how to get humans to Mars, but thanks to the competition they hosted with MakerBot, they have decided upon the perfect Red Planet apartment.
Nearly 230 designers entered their visions for gracious Martian living.
According to the rules, the structures proposed had to be human-friendly and be made of materials that could be used in a 3D printing process.
Whether the construction matter came from Mars or Earth was left to the discretion of the designers.
The judging process was said to have been a tough one, but in the end top honors were awarded to a single-level, 2-bedroom abode called The Queen B.
All the interior spaces are six-sided hexagons 16 feet in diameter and arranged like a honeycomb.
The roomy central living area is the dimension of 4 hexagons without the interior walls, and in the model includes two sofas, a television, and a large charging station.
While the winning designer looked to nature for inspiration, the designs of the runners up were informed by history.
2nd place was awarded to a multi-level pyramid complex and the third place entry resembled the Acropolis in Greece.
The winners received 3D printing products manufactured by MakerBot.
