A new elephant at Reid Park Zoo in Tucson, Arizona is learning the art of walking. The female newborn and her mother, 24-year-old Semba are bonding quite well and the proud mom is helping her baby learn how to get around.
As a way to get her started, Semba gently nudged the newborn to get her in an upright position. Once she was somewhat balanced, Semba showed her how to put a foot forward.
When the baby tried out the technique, Semba affectionately cheered her on by caressing the newborn with her trunk.
It was a little after10:30 on Wednesday night when Semba started showing the first signs of active labor.
At about 10:55, Semba’s baby greeted the world. This makes it Semba’s third birth, but it’s the first one born at Reid Park Zoo.
According to zookeepers, the newborn is following her mother and nursing regularly. The Director of Parks and Recreation, Fred Gray remarked “Our top priority is the health of Semba and her calf - and I'm pleased to hear they are both doing well.”
