ROUGH CUT. NO REPORTER NARRATION
Last minute shoppers were out in force in Hanoi on Monday (September 8), picking up holiday decorations for the Mid-Autumn Festival.
Mooncakes and other seasonal delicacies were selling like, well, hotcakes.
The full moon festival is held on the 15th day of the eighth month in the Vietnamese calendar.
Vietnam celebrates the festival along with China, but this year tensions with Beijing over maritime territorial disputes have meant a change in the marketplace.
Consumers have been turning up their noses at toys, lanterns and other products made in China.
Retailers have had to find alternative sources for the seasonal wares, bringing in goods from Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia.
One toy shop owner says buyers also are looking for made-in-Vietnam products as a show of nationalism.
Another says parents hesitate to buy a toy if it was made in China, but don't think twice if it was made in Vietnam.
