"No Good Deed" punishes the competition at the box office this weekend as the thriller about an escaped convict who terrorizes a woman and her children rises to number one.

U.S. and Canadian ticket sales show it brought in some $24.5 million.

That places family-friendly "Dolphin Tale 2" second on the charts over the weekend with $16.6 million, according to studio estimates.

The film is a sequel to a 2011 hit about a clunky marine mammal.

Third in the mix was last weekend's box office star, "Guardians of the Galaxy," which netted $8 million in domestic sales.
