A police officer in Shenandoah, Texas is being called a hero for putting his own safety at risk to stop a wrong-way speeding driver.

On Friday night, Sgt. Gary Sharpen was weaving in between lanes along Interstate 45 northbound to alert motorists of the danger after a report came in concerning a car that was traveling the wrong way.

The driver in the PT Cruiser wasn’t only coming against traffic, but he was flying, as his speed was said to be about 100 miles per hour. Sharpen positioned his vehicle in between the cars behind him and the reckless driver.

Sharpen said. "I knew that the traffic behind me, those people in those cars, their lives were at risk.”

The speeding car was able to stop just feet away from the cop’s SUV. The driver turned around and led police on a chase.

Eventually the suspect pulled over. When police officers approached the vehicle, they saw two children, aged 18 months and 4 years old, inside.

They were removed from the car and are said to be uninjured. The driver was arrested and is now facing charges of DWI, reckless endangerment and evading arrest.
