Fire broke aboard a cross-channel passenger ferry on Monday (September 29) as it was docking in northern France.

337 passengers were on board when the fire took hold in the engine room of the Pride of Canterbury shortly after 08:00 local time (07:00 GMT), as the ship arrived into the French port of Calais.

The ferry operator, P&O Ferries, said the blaze was put out by automatic sprinklers and no injuries were reported.

P&O said the Pride of Canterbury would be out of service while the extent of the smoke damage was assessed.

Other ships run by the company were expected to take on the extra passengers in the interim.
