This video lecture from Aldehydes and Ketones (F.Sc. second year Chemistry) covers general preparation methods for aldehydes and ketones. The oxidation of primary alcohols gives corresponding aldehydes i.e. methanols to methanal, ethanol to ethanal, propanol to propanal e.t.c. Secondary alcohols are more difficult to oxidize and they yield ketones. Tertiary alcohols are resistant towards oxidation and do not convert to carbonyl compounds but instead carry out an elimination reaction giving alkenes. Calcium salts of formic acid upon heating give acetaldehyde whereas calcium salt of acetic acid gives acetone or propanone.
