The fight against Islamic State extremists in the Syrian town of Kobani is being won, according to the US military.

Kurdish forces on the ground say that ISIL has been driven out of most of the town, which borders Turkey. US-led air strikes have helped push back the jihadists, with more than a dozen strikes carried out over the past 24 hours.

US State Department spokesperson,Jen Psaki, confirmed the US had been in direct talks with Kurdish opposition fighters in Syria.

“So, as you know, we have for some time had conversations through intermediaries with the PYD. We have engaged over the course of just last weekend directly with the PYD,” she said.

The town has been under siege for weeks. Fighting is still continuing and the security situation remains tenuous.

The hope is the city can be liberated within the next few days.
