Liberia calls for stronger action to halt Ebola outbreak

The president of Liberia has called for stronger international action to bring Ebola under control. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf said the outbreak will leave a “lost generation” of young West Africans.

Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone have been worst hit. The latest figures from the World Health Organisation show the virus has killed more than 4,500 people there since March.

In the EU, France has begun checking for symptoms of Ebola at Paris Charles de Gaulle airport.

Passengers arriving from Guinea have been screened using temperature scanners as part of increased efforts to prevent the global spread of the virus.

Britain has deployed military personnel to help set up treatment centres and an Ebola training academy.

Meanwhile Fidel Castro has said Cuba is ready to cooperate with the US to fight Ebola.

It has already sent medics to Sierra Leone and plans to send others soon to Liberia and Guinea.
