When the song ‘Like a Virgin’ rings in our ears, most of us automatically think of Madonna. However a singing nun in Italy, Sister Cristina Scuccia has given the tune a new twist.
Instead of Madonna’s fast-paced classic, Scuccia’s version is unhurried. Basically, she turned it into a romantic piece that conveys the healing influence of love.
Scuccia explains “Reading the text, without being influenced by previous interpretations, you discover that it is a song about the power of love to renew people and rescue them from their past.”
The ‘Like a Virgin’ choice might come off as unusual to some folks, given that Scuccia is a nun, but she successfully managed to change the implication of the lyrics.
That’s because the beat is drastically slower, as is each word of the lyrics. The end result is something that sounds more like a true prayer than a pop tune.
Scuccia won ‘The Voice of Italy’ talent show this year. Her first album is slated to be released next month. Her cover of ‘Like a Virgin’ will be one of the tracks on the record.
