Carnivals and the homecoming parade,
it’s autumn and I’m in second grade.
The Fun House.
(We never went in, every year we talked it over again.)
See the queens? Do you know their names?
Let’s go try the shooting game!

Summer’s over,
looks like winter’s on its way,
today’s the last carnival day.

The Ferris Wheel, the cotton candy,
“Time to go! Ya ready, Sandy? ”

People burning leaves,
woodhue fills the air,
mingles in your hair when the day ends.

Lying in bed, remembering as I did then,
Molly and Ronny,
Karen and Sue,
all of us in Jackson School.

The Carnival, the homecoming, autumn,
and my second grade friends.
