I NEVER WROTE A POEM FOR YOU

I never wrote a poem for you
That you do not listen to for me-
And you never spoke in the distance a syllable
I did not overhear in my dreams-
We listened and loved in the deepest way
And this was the goodness of our life-
So when you withdrew and said goodbye
I did not know how not to hate myself
Until after time and more time and more time
I could grow distant and strive to survive without you.
