A flash of silver under light
I watch you swim away
Lost under a deep blue sky
A slip of silk
A thin translucent light
And then I watched the bait the hook
The bite you took
The rip and the tug of the line on flesh
I had loved you for a short while
Now I watch your body strain and toss
your lungs puff in and out like flapping wings
I watch you wriggle to break free
From that strange hook that drew you in
Your silver fleck now dry and cold
And what was love has now grown cold
I stand apart and helpless watch you die
Strange fish, and wonder why?
