They were years of such energy and promises of change,
of imagination, experimentation and boundaries to expand.
Fighting for freedom, fighting for peace and for equality,
the philosophy of love was being preached to you and me.

We wore jeans that we'd embroidered, patched and widened the flare.
Some walked bare foot when they could and wore flowers in their hair.
Beads were in abundance, kaftans, afghan coats and loon pants too.
Progressive music was underground and psychedelic art just grew.

We saw East of Eden at the Warwick with Dave's violin walk about.
Went to a Led Zeppelin party and we danced all night long, full out.
Blind Faith and the Stones played in free concerts at Hyde Park.
Music shone with individuality and an imaginative spark.

We thought we could change the world and make it a better place.
Believing anything was possible; that was a huge mistake.
Thinking back it was extremely strange how it all suddenly came to an end.
Love and Peace went out the window; fashion, art and music just went bland

Did the powers that be get truly afraid that we might actually make a difference?
They can't make money from peace and individuals aren't given credence.
They prefer everyone be put into boxes so they can be easily controlled,
so that the power crazy can carry on with their evil corruptions of old.

They were years of such excitement that held so many possibilities.
Boundaries were stretched and there were certainly many changes.
But I felt cheated then as I feel cheated now, for the dreams that could have been.
We were the generation they would have preferred, they had not heard and had not seen.
