Speaking at his weekly audience in St. Peter's Square on Wednesday (October 29), Pope Francis renewed his appeal for the international community to ''make every necessary effort'' to eradicate the "relentless" Ebola virus and help the stricken populations.

''Faced with the worsening of the Ebola epidemics, I wish to express my deep concern about this relentless disease that is spreading mostly in the African continent, and mostly among the most destitute of people,'' Pope Francis said, addressing the thousands of pilgrims that crowded the square.

The Ebola virus has already killed some 5,000 people in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea since it was first detected in March 2014.
