A pet owner in Florida is sharing her story after her dog’s eye was removed without her consent.
Kimberly Hayden had taken her 12-year-old pug named Chloe to the vet as a precaution checkup, as the canine had an irritated eye.
The veterinarian determined Chloe had an abrasion. Hayden was told she had three choices, either have the eye removed, a graft performed or try eye drops.
She decided on oral medication and eye drops for Chloe, but employees wanted to see the pug again in a few days for a follow-up with a veterinarian.
Hayden dropped Chloe off on Monday while she went to work. At lunchtime, Hayden got a call from a staffer at the facility, informing her that Chloe was recovering from surgery, when no such procedure had been prearranged.
Initially, the animal hospital wanted Hayden to pay for the operation but has since decided the surgery was done in error and the cost will not be the owner’s responsibility.
A statement from Banfield Pet Hospital notes “We apologize for the lack of clear communication and will continue to attempt to reach Ms. Hayden in an effort to further resolve her concerns. In the meantime, we wish Chloe a speedy recovery.”
Chloe seems to be in good spirits despite the unfortunate circumstances.
