Following two days of protests that led to the resignation of President Blaise Compaore.
On Saturday, the military backed Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Zida as head of state -- overruling the chief of staff who had also claimed to be in charge.
(SOUNDBITE) (French) LIEUTENANT COLONEL, ISAAC ZIDA, SAYING:
"Starting from today, I will assume all responsibilities during this transitional phase and take over as head of state to ensure the continuity of governance."
Protests were sparked after Compaore attempted to change the constitution to extend his 27-year rule.
At least three people were killed after protesters stormed the parliament building and set it on fire.
The unfolding crisis is being closely watched by the U.S. and France --
Both were close military allies of Compaore in the fight against al Qaeda-linked groups in West Africa.
