Out the window in the dark
A rustling sound, a dog's bark,
Then silence as you wait.
Creaking hinges of the gate?
Maybe just the branches
Moving in the wind; scratches
Against the wall
As wet leaves begin to fall.
Could it have been the gate?
But still you hesitate,
To look outside,
Maybe whatever is, is now inside.
The silence is overwhelming
It's like it was in the beginning
No movement stirs the air
Yet, what is it, over there?
The sound of breathing, soft and low
Perhaps only the curtains as they billow.
Moving in the breath of air
As though someone's passing there.
A shadow so long and tall
Maybe, nothing; nothing at all.
Just your imagination on a lark!
There can be no shadow's in the dark!
Then a sound for which you're certain
More than just a rustle of the curtain,
In the other room, padding of feet
As though making a hasty retreat.
Suddenly a light so bright
Dispels the darkness of the night.
It's the call of nature
One so pure.
Tinkling in the reservoir.
