When I was just a young boy
living in that shabby old shack.
A man said boy, boy, boy
do ya want your freedom back.

Chorus

Joy, Joy, Joy Lord I want my freedom back.
I want out of this little shabby old shack.
so give me ma freedoooom back,
give me ma freedom back.

I dug holes so deep Looooord,
knock me off ma feet.
I work on the railroad track
near broke ma baaaack.
That old massa, well he promise give ma
freedom back.

I said Joy, Joy, Joy I ain no toy.
Stop playing wit me now, a wanna be free.
a wanna be free Lord, a wanna be free.

Chorus

A thousand days gone by,
under the deep gray sky
I’m trudging along,
many dark miles ahead.
That damn old massa, on my backside.
He don give me no freedom
I got no where to hide
No no no no no no feedom
No where to hide

I’m gonna dropp down and die
I’m gonna dropp down and die
Ohhh Lord!
I’m gonna dropp down and die

(End of Song) Message to follow:

Sometimes I picture myself way back, sitting in the barns
with my forefathers. I feel their pain and I sing the songs
that they sung then. Some call them “The Blues, some
call them “Negro Spiritual” I call them songs of Life,
Life the way it was then. The words come easy because I
remember what it was like. Some may wonder how is
that possible, I can’t explain that but I was there, long
ago, I cried, I wailed, I hurt, I suffered with them. While
writing this Spiritual song, I saw the barns and sad faces
and felt their pain. I write of a young boy who had a
dream but that dream many years later ended in death.
