A man returns
To his childhood home
Thirty years past
A high school prom
Where he danced
With his sweetheart,
Where they walked in flowery parks,
Where he rode his bike
To elementary school.
The elementary school
Has been torn down
And is a weeded lot
Where stray dogs congregate,
The swing-set and merry-go-round
Are rusted in the park,
The childhood sweetheart
Divorced and living
In another city or town.
Today’s smile
Is tomorrow’s frown,
The love that finds a way to escape
May never return
With the breeze that swept it away.
