I woke in evening
no idea of time_
three years old_
unknowing place
in world
in family.
Socially shy, backward,
cold, picked up pink
blanket_cloaked self
securely, walk through dim kitchen
push open lounge-room door_
surprised audience_
Mother and two big brothers
who cried,
“It’s the man
in the pink blanket! ”
Felt excited and exited_
to stage entrance to
lounge-room light
again and again
to same refrain_
“It’s the man in
the pink blanket! ”
Loved attention that night,
from that day on
have always sought it.
Pink_is the colour_
of blushing, quivering, excitement.
Pink_is the colour_
of Ham.
