SEDOKA

The Sedoka is an unrhymed poem made up of two three-line katauta with the following syllable counts: 5/7/7,5/7/7. A Sedoka, pair of katauta as a single poem, may address the same subject from differing perspectives.

IN THE NIGHT 1

in the misty glen
lanterns float throughout the night
ghosts - the restless wanderers

a shriek in the night
an owl swoops hunting this night
what animal - source of fright

IN THE NIGHT 2

invading my sleep
your words mousing in the night
lips of light brushing my dream

I tasted new love
rising from an other self
fingering inner curtains

A NEW DAY’S COLOR

sun striking its blush
coloring the dawning sky
I know a new day’s color

a new promise born
spring’s murmurings rustling free
what koan* to wrestle today

*koan - a short, pithy but illogical statement, intended to free
the mind from its rational mode of thought. Zen masters used
these to help their student break into satori (enlightenment) .
