'Whoe'er wrote this wrote it full well:
The same is writ on the gates of Hell! '
At those tall, terrifying gates
No welcome wagging tail e'er waits;
No sound of any purr or bark
Is heard through all that Stygian dark;
No peal of bird songs ever come
To gladden Pandemonium;
In Hades no pet e'er can dwell
Because there is no love in Hell.
And yet, I think, in that dread place
If some pet lover in disgrace
Felt a dear paw probe for his hand
His hardened heart; which might withstand
Gehenna's hate of the outcast,
Would, for sheer anguish, break at last.
