Martin O'Neill - A Basket Of Junes

I sit here
Sifting my basket of Junes
Birthdays and Sundays
And picnics
Under blue skies
Feeling the sun, caressing the field
Where children, hair wildly rippling in
Dappled, wondrous sunlight
Running for all the world.
Shrieking in joy
Whilst Dad and Uncles stood
Wrapped in smoke with beer bottles
Around the barbeque
As the day unfolded
Around family, food,
Presents and overcooked burgers
Glorious dips and
Some vegetarian stuff by your Auntie that is
Unusual.
Tastes nice though.
The kite got stuck in a tree and
We left it there
Like a memento
Or a signature
On a day
Rippling
