Sibghatullah Khan - Poems Lay Scattered in the City Landscape

Poems lay scattered in the city landscape
like dead bodies after a Drone.
I went picking one by one:
poor headless, faceless, rotting trunks.
Ambulances hooted on the roads
ferrying dead bodies to the morgue.
The burial was tough:
for want of space, two or sometimes three
were given to Earth.

I was looking for the lost limbs,
the mutilated parts of poems to stitch them back:
all lines, alliterations, and tropes,
half, slanted, and feminine rhymes were gone.
Only an odd scheme of vowels survived
as if they were at war with consonants.
The left over syllables wailed like women
and played a requiem of their own.
