European-led efforts to resolve the Israeli Palestinian conflict are being resisted by Prime MInister Benjamin Netanyahu.
After his meeting with his Italian counterpart on Monday, the Israeli leader is due for more talks today with US Secretary of state John Kerry in London.
Israel has warned the US it expects Washington’s support in vetoing a Jordanian backed draft United Nations resolution putting a 2016 deadline on a withdrawl from land Palestinians seek for a state.
It’s territory Israel occupied in the 1967 Middle East war.
France is also leading a bid among Europeans to draft a resolution with a less definitive timetable before Israel’s March 17 election.
Although the US has said it could not accept the Jordanian backed, Palestinian-drafted proposal, Kerry has indicated the US position is not yet fixed and a modified resolution could still be of interest.
The Palestinians are hoping the draft resolution will be put in some form before the UN Security Council on Wednesday.
Since Israeli Palestinian peace talks collapsed last April several European parliaments have voted in support of Palestinian statehood in non.binding UN resolutions.
