Petty Officer Jon-Paul Rios explained “He had intended to go camping and he drifted from beneath the bridge in Marathon out to sea.” On Monday, Sutterfield was spotted during law enforcement patrols of the area.
A crew on a Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater HC-130 Hercules aircraft witnessed a fire and a tent. They also saw a man, later identified as Sutterfield, waving his arms, indicating he needed help. Officers immediately dropped food, water and a radio down to him.
A crew from the Coast Guard Cutter Kathleen Moore was then contacted for assistance. Upon arrival, they picked Sutterfield up and transported him to Coast Guard Sector Key West.

Rios made it known that Sutterfield is very fortunate to have survived the 6-day long ordeal.
