Data released by the U.S. Department of Transportation reveals which airlines have a high probability of either losing or damaging a passenger's checked baggage.

Air-travel can be hectic and stress-inducing, but few things are worse than when an airline loses your checked luggage.

The U.S. Department of Transportation has released a list of which airlines lost their passengers' luggage through September of this year.

Not only were lost bags included, so were any travel items that were deemed damaged, delayed or pilfered.

1.6 million cases were filed in the first nine months of the year.

The biggest offender was Envoy Air, previously known as American Eagle. Approximately nine bags were lost for every 1,000 passengers.

Second on the list is ExpressJet, who had an issue with an estimated six bags out of 1,000 passengers.

AirTran, SkyWest, Southwest and American followed.

Unfortunately, the data only tracked U.S. airlines and bags lost on domestic flights.

The information is also skewed, because airlines include all the passengers who have flown with them in their total, not merely those who have checked their luggage.

This means the probability of a bag getting lost may be higher.
